Fun (and Healthy) Stocking Stuffers!

Valencia dentist Tis’ the season for sugar cookies and gingerbread houses. And unless you’re on the naughty list, most of us hope for a stocking full of candy and fun nicknacks. This season think about adding some oral health items that will be sure to make every kid smile!

Fun Flossers
These little guys are more like toys than flossers. They come in a variety of different colors, shapes, and even animals. Flossing should be part of your oral health routine. These colorful flossers make flossing fun while also making it easy to use floss for little hands. These also come in adult size and are great for travel! They will make a great stocking stuffer addition for anyone at any age.

Singing Toothbrush
The toothbrushes come in a variety of songs and colors (as well as size and density). While the kids are brushing their teeth, the song plays. This not only distracts the kids from brushing their teeth but it will also help them know how long to brush for. This could be for kids of all ages. If you need help, ask your friendly Valencia dentist to help determine the right toothbrush for your little one.

Sugar Free Candy
For most kids, they won’t know the difference. The kids will still enjoy getting the candy, you’ll still enjoy watching them be overjoyed with all their candy, and their teeth will be nice and happy! Here’s a little more information about sugar free candy.

Of course, there are plenty of great stocking stuffers that would contribute to a healthy oral hygiene: mouthwash, whitening strips, and water picks! Contact your Valencia dentist if you’re looking for other gifts of stocking sutffers for you or your little ones this season.

To Floss or Not to Floss, is that the question?

If you’ve ever visited your Valencia Dentist, you’ve more than likely been encouraged to floss. The American Dental Association continues to support the act of flossing as “an essential part of taking care of your teeth and gums.”

However, earlier this year the Associated Press asked the department of Health and Human Services and Agriculture to show scientific evidence of the benefit of habitual flossing. After research of over 25 published studies, they could not find evidence that supports flossing. In the new dietary guidelines that will be released later this year, the recommendation to floss will be removed.

Everyone’s personal hygiene regimen is specific to them, and your friendly Valencia Dentist can help identify what is best for you, but in general - flossing is a good practice and habit to have. That said, similar to brushing too often, or too hard, flossing incorrectly can have a negative effect to your gums, teeth, and dental work.

Cavities start from built up bacteria, mostly between the teeth, which flossing can help prevent. The interim chair of the Department of Periodontics at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, Andrew Sullivan says “if people floss once a day, they’re doing a tremendous amount of good.”

There is no denying the benefits we have seen when patients start flossing. Come in for a checkup today and ask your Valencia dentist how flossing could benefit you!
