How Your Diet Choices Can Help Your Enamel

Enamel – it’s one of the four major tissues that makes up the tooth in humans and many other animals, and even some species of fish! Enamel is the normally visible part of the tooth, covering the crown.

Your enamel is one of the major parts of your teeth, the main protector against tooth decay.  Protecting your enamel is one of the most crucial steps to maintaining a healthy mouth.  Your diet is one of the ways that you can affect the health of your tooth enamel – for good or bad.

Family Dental
Some of the main foods that help restore, strengthen, and protect enamels are dairy products, foods containing Vitamin D, and foods with high amounts of protein.  The combination of these nutrients not only supports the health of your enamel, but that of the bones throughout your body as well.

However, there are many foods and drinks that can harm and decay your tooth enamel.  These include sour foods, acidic fruits such as citrus, and sugary drinks like soda.  That’s not to say that fruits should be removed from your diet – but try eating fruit with a meal containing other foods to help mitigate the damage to your teeth.

Regardless of the state of your enamel, there's always room for improvement, and Go Dental Valencia can provide an anxiety free visit to help you get started.  We provide trustworthy and gentle dentistry for our patients, and we can help you shape your diet to improve and maintain the health of your mouth – contact us today to find out how!

Are You Expecting? Don’t Avoid Your Dentist!

Many pregnant women tend to avoid their dentist during their pregnancy, especially if they think a surgical procedure would be required. But according to a new study published in The Journal of the American Dental Association, procedures requiring local anesthetics are completely safe for you and your baby.

Family Dentist
The study compared pregnancy outcomes between a group of women exposed to dental procedures featuring local anesthetics and a group of women who haven’t. The outcome shows that there is no increased risk for major medical problems, such as cerebral palsy, cleft lip, or heart defects. The study also looked at the rates for miscarriages, premature births, and birth weight, and found nothing that would indicate dental procedures have any impact on your growing baby.

While most pregnant women will avoid procedures, despite ongoing dental issues for fear of their baby’s health, those who conducted the study urge women to focus on their oral health. A healthy mouth leads to a healthy body, which leads to a healthy baby. Let your friendly Valencia dentist help you achieve your best health today.

Dry Mouth? Not For Long

Valencia DentistDry mouth, caused by a lack of saliva production in your mouth, may be coming to an end. A research team from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio may have found a way to repair those damaged salivary glands. And the key is silk.

Researchers have found that silk, produced by the humble silkworm, provides the perfect scaffolding for stem cells to repair damaged glands, necessary for the production of saliva.

Currently, there is no treatment for low-producing, or non-functioning salivary glands, and they are rarely able to repair themselves. But now that may change. This new treatment may help over 4 million Americans suffering from Sjögren’s Syndrome, an autoimmune disease that attacks the tear ducts and salivary glands. It can also help patients suffering from underactive salivary glands due to radiation treatments used for head, throat, and neck cancers, and even people suffering dry mouth as a side effect of their medications.

Saliva is vital to healthy teeth. It helps prevent oral infections and food buildup, begins the digestion process for food, and helps you with speaking and swallowing. A lack of saliva can lead to tooth decay, cavities, gum disease, bad breath, and more.

If you feel you may be suffering from dry mouth, be sure to discuss it today with your friendly Valencia dentist today.
