How Your Diet Choices Can Help Your Enamel

Enamel – it’s one of the four major tissues that makes up the tooth in humans and many other animals, and even some species of fish! Enamel is the normally visible part of the tooth, covering the crown.

Your enamel is one of the major parts of your teeth, the main protector against tooth decay.  Protecting your enamel is one of the most crucial steps to maintaining a healthy mouth.  Your diet is one of the ways that you can affect the health of your tooth enamel – for good or bad.

Family Dental
Some of the main foods that help restore, strengthen, and protect enamels are dairy products, foods containing Vitamin D, and foods with high amounts of protein.  The combination of these nutrients not only supports the health of your enamel, but that of the bones throughout your body as well.

However, there are many foods and drinks that can harm and decay your tooth enamel.  These include sour foods, acidic fruits such as citrus, and sugary drinks like soda.  That’s not to say that fruits should be removed from your diet – but try eating fruit with a meal containing other foods to help mitigate the damage to your teeth.

Regardless of the state of your enamel, there's always room for improvement, and Go Dental Valencia can provide an anxiety free visit to help you get started.  We provide trustworthy and gentle dentistry for our patients, and we can help you shape your diet to improve and maintain the health of your mouth – contact us today to find out how!

Are You Expecting? Don’t Avoid Your Dentist!

Many pregnant women tend to avoid their dentist during their pregnancy, especially if they think a surgical procedure would be required. But according to a new study published in The Journal of the American Dental Association, procedures requiring local anesthetics are completely safe for you and your baby.

Family Dentist
The study compared pregnancy outcomes between a group of women exposed to dental procedures featuring local anesthetics and a group of women who haven’t. The outcome shows that there is no increased risk for major medical problems, such as cerebral palsy, cleft lip, or heart defects. The study also looked at the rates for miscarriages, premature births, and birth weight, and found nothing that would indicate dental procedures have any impact on your growing baby.

While most pregnant women will avoid procedures, despite ongoing dental issues for fear of their baby’s health, those who conducted the study urge women to focus on their oral health. A healthy mouth leads to a healthy body, which leads to a healthy baby. Let your friendly Valencia dentist help you achieve your best health today.

Dry Mouth? Not For Long

Valencia DentistDry mouth, caused by a lack of saliva production in your mouth, may be coming to an end. A research team from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio may have found a way to repair those damaged salivary glands. And the key is silk.

Researchers have found that silk, produced by the humble silkworm, provides the perfect scaffolding for stem cells to repair damaged glands, necessary for the production of saliva.

Currently, there is no treatment for low-producing, or non-functioning salivary glands, and they are rarely able to repair themselves. But now that may change. This new treatment may help over 4 million Americans suffering from Sjögren’s Syndrome, an autoimmune disease that attacks the tear ducts and salivary glands. It can also help patients suffering from underactive salivary glands due to radiation treatments used for head, throat, and neck cancers, and even people suffering dry mouth as a side effect of their medications.

Saliva is vital to healthy teeth. It helps prevent oral infections and food buildup, begins the digestion process for food, and helps you with speaking and swallowing. A lack of saliva can lead to tooth decay, cavities, gum disease, bad breath, and more.

If you feel you may be suffering from dry mouth, be sure to discuss it today with your friendly Valencia dentist today.

Missing Teeth Predict Future Health

In a recent 13 year study, it was found that the number of missing teeth directly correlated with overall health later in life. Researchers studied 8,446 individuals, ages 25 – 75, and determined their missing teeth as a baseline. 13 years later, they followed up by determining if they had died or developed any incidental diseases, such as heart disease or diabetes.
man with missing teeth

Worldwide, noncommunicable diseases such as heart disease and diabetes are the leading cause of death. Strong links between periodontitis and these noncommunicable diseases have been found. Untreated periodontitis is also the leading cause of tooth loss.

The study performed by the University of Helsinki and the National Institute for Health and Welfare has found that people missing as few as 5 teeth had an increased risk of heart disease and heart attacks by 140%. 9 or more missing teeth, and the risk for heart disease rises to 151%, diabetes to 131%, and death to 137%. For patients missing all of their teeth, their risk climbs to 140-168%.

If this sounds scary to you, never fear. Your friendly Valencia dentist is here for you to discuss your current oral health, and help you keep a healthy smile that will last you a lifetime.

Natural Products to Keep Your Smile Healthy

Natural and safe are important to many of our patients. While going a completely natural route seems like a nice choice, keep in mind that it is not a safe alternative to visiting your friendly Valencia dentist for regular checkups and cleanings.

Natural-ProductBut there are many natural products out there to help keep your mouth and smile healthy between visits and between brushing and flossing. All of them can be found at your local grocery store, too.

Baking Soda has been used by your parents and even your parents’ parents to keep their smiles bright. The baking soda is abrasive enough to scrub off stubborn stains and help fight tooth decay.

You can pair that baking soda with some hydrogen peroxide. Mix some peroxide with some water first, and then you have an effective, natural bacteria killer.

Xylitol is a sweet alcohol used to replace sugar in many chewing gums. While its dental benefits are still debated, xylitol is a sugar-free way to keep dry mouth at bay. Preventing dry mouth will aid in prevent tooth decay, as all that saliva will wash away bacteria in your mouth.

Green Tea is debated, but it is shown to be effective in preventing food starches from adhering to your teeth and feeding bacteria. This can also help prevent gum inflammation from forming.

Vitamins, especially Vitamin D, can help boost your body’s defenses and prevent bacteria from causing too much harm. While there is not a link between Vitamin D and preventing tooth decay, there is a link between not having enough Vitamin D and an increased chance of developing gum disease.

Eucalyptus oil, menthol oil, and tea tree oil are three common toothpaste additives. Not only do they have strong flavors and help give you a fresh breath, they are shown to help kill bacteria and prevent gum inflammation.

If you have any questions, or need any recommendations for some natural products to try, do not hesitate to schedule an appointment with your friendly Valencia dentist today.

Naturally Occurring Plant Chemical Could Prevent Tooth Decay

Healthy TeethResearchers at the University of Edinburgh found a naturally occurring chemical that just may block plaque and bacteria from adhering to your teeth, preventing future tooth decay.
The chemical, trans-chalcone, is similar to chemicals found in licorice root, and has been found to prevent bacteria from creating a protective biofilm, and stopping plaque formation.

The bacteria Streptococcus mutans metabolizes sugar and carbs into harmful acid, causing tooth decay. Once this bacteria is able to create a biofilm, it adheres to the surface of the tooth in the form of plaque. Without proper oral care, plaque will break down the protective enamel on your teeth, allowing decay to set in.

The chemical would inhibit the bacteria from forming into plaque, significantly reducing the amount of potential tooth decay. Combined with regular visits to your friendly Valencia dentist and daily brushing and flossing, this could potentially positively impact oral health forever.
So far, the trials have shown that the chemical will react with a biofilm creating enzyme found in Streptococcus mutans, preventing its formation. But this is in a test tube. Trials in real settings have yet to take place.

Until this chemical comes into use, you will have to visit your friendly Valencia dentist for all of your oral health needs and make sure to brush and floss at least twice a day.

Dentists Find Leading Cause of Tooth Decay

Roughly 79% of adults have a form of tooth decay and dental erosion. To find out why, dentists began looking at their diets. Two things stood out as a common link between all of them: citric acid and sugar.
Citric acid binds to the calcium found in your teeth and weakens the protective enamel. Sugar sticks to the surface of the tooth and feeds bacteria, speeding up their acid production. The combination of the two is the perfect storm of tooth decay.

tooth decayFruit juice and soda drinks contain large amounts of both of these substances. Of the 79% of adults with tooth decay, 5% of them have severe tooth wear and admit to drinking more fruit juice and soda than any other adults per day. Adults with healthier teeth reportedly drink more milk than fruit juice or soda. Drinking the sugary drinks more than once a day can significantly increase your odds of tooth decay.

But if you have signs of tooth decay and dental erosion now, all hope is not lost. By visiting your friendly Valencia dentist and receiving regular checkups and advi
ce, you can prevent your teeth from eroding further and preventing future issues. Stopping that decay now can prevent a root canal in the future.

If you are feeling parched, reach for that glass of water or milk. Not only are they better for your teeth, but they are better for your body.

To make sure that your teeth are in tiptop shape, be sure to schedule a visit with your friendly Valencia dentist today.

Anxiety May Lead to Tooth Damage

Tend to bite your nails when you are nervous? Clench your jaw when you are tense? Well, recent studies have shown that if you suffer from any form of social anxiety, you are at double the risk of damaging your teeth by grinding them.

Bruxism - Teeth GrindingThe study also shows that anxiety sufferers are three times more likely to suffer from what they call “jaw play”, which is tensing and slightly moving your jaw without any tooth contact. This can contribute to TMJ and also migraines. You are also eight times more likely to suffer from “awake bruxism”, which is classified as tooth grinding while awake.

Indication of moderate to severe dental wear is much more common in anxiety sufferers, which means it is important for you to visit your dentist often to discuss your concerns with tooth grinding. If they can help you determine that anxiety is playing a part in your grinding, your friendly Valencia dentist can help you find a doctor to possibly get your started on an anxiety treatment.

So if you notice yourself tensing your jaw when you see a crowd, or biting your nails when you’re in public, or grinding your teeth while waiting in line, it may be time to talk to your friendly Valencia dentist about possible solutions. A happy mind leads to a happy body which leaves a happy smile.

Hidden Benefits of Brushing Your Teeth

Aside from the obvious dental health benefits of keeping your teeth clean, there are several previously unknown benefits emerging as studies continue. As a result, it is more important than ever to keep your smile in tip-top shape by visiting your friendly Valencia dentist regularly.

Brushing lowers the risk of dementia.
There is no direct cause known between your dental health and developing dementia, but recent studies have shown that older adults who don’t brush daily have a 65% greater chance of developing dementia later in life. Of course, brushing your teeth will not prevent you from getting Alzheimer’s disease and dementia – it’s not a cause and effect.
Cup of toothbrushes

Brushing lowers the risk of heart disease.
Adults who regularly go for their thorough dental cleanings have a much lower risk of heart attacks than those who skip out.

Brushing lowers the risk of stroke.
Patients who come in for their regular checkups and professional scaling have a decreased risk of suffering from a stroke later in life.

Brushing lowers the risk of pneumonia.
Regular brushing helps kills bacteria, preventing it from moving into your lungs and developing into pneumonia or even chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. These conditions develop when bacteria travels from your throat into your lower respiratory tract.

Brushing lowers the risk of preterm babies.
Pregnant mothers who regularly visit their dentist reduce their risk of delivering preterm babies, and the babies suffer less from preterm low birth weights. It is important to talk to your friendly Valencia dentist throughout your pregnancy to ensure a healthy mom and a healthy baby.

Brushing lowers the risk of erectile dysfunction.
Chronic gum disease is much more common in men suffering from erectile dysfunction. Keeping your gums clean and healthy may lower the risk of developing it down the road.

If you have any questions or concerns about your dental health, and, most importantly, your future health, be sure you schedule your appointment with your friendly Valencia dentist today.

More Links between Gums and Heart

New research helps strengthen the existing link between oral health and heart health. Researchers have found that oral treatment remedies used to reduce inflammation caused by gum disease (periodontitis) also prevents vascular inflammation. As a result, the reduced inflammation lowers the risk of heart attack.

Resolvin E1, the anti-inflammation molecule used to treat gum inflammation linked to gum disease, directly impacts the veins and arteries of the body. It helps reduce inflammation in the artery walls, leading to overall better heart health.

Researchers hope that this discovery, which proves that oral problems and, most importantly, how they are treated, have long-term and lasting effects on the rest of the body. In particular, the heart.
Heart disease accounts for one in four deaths in the United States, according the CDC, and that rate is on the rise. By raising awareness of the mouth’s health in relation to the rest of the body can help lower that rate. The public is well aware of the heart’s impact on the body, and observe heart disease risk factors such as hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, and the dangers of smoking – but very few think that gum disease could be a leading indicator (and potential cause) of heart disease.

If you have any concerns about your gum’s health, be sure to schedule your appointment with your friendly Valencia dentist today. They can go over your risks and discuss long-term goals in preventing the disease.

New Way to Treat Decay

Most preventative treatments to reduce tooth decay and dental plaque have one major shortfall: saliva can wash the treatment away before it has any chance to be effective. But researchers have found a way to stop that from happening!

The struggle with getting treatments to stick stems on the fact that plaque creates a glue of sorts and firmly attaches to your teeth. Current treatments are able to treat the plaque, but quickly wash away once saliva is introduced.

The new treatment is actually a nano
particle system – super small particles – that is positively charged: the opposite of your plaque. In addition to that, the nanoparticles are hydrophobic, which repel liquids and allows the particles to cling to the plaque, and are pH-activated, which react when exposed to acids.

The treatment is designed to activate in low pH (acidic) environments, which is perfect for plaque, as the bacteria releases acids when exposed to sugars and starches. The acid is what actually causes the tooth decay, so a treatment that activates in that situation will work to prevent future damage and treat old damage by killing the bacteria when it is active. Tests of the treatment are proving to be effective. The research team tested the nanoparticles on rats infected with the Streptococcus mutans bacteria. When administered without the nanoparticles, the rats had no change in the number of cavities, and the treatment only reduced a minimal number of cavities. When treated with the nanoparticles, the number and severity of cavities were both reduce in a significant way.

Only your friendly Valencia dentist can treat your tooth decay. If you have any questions or concerns about cavities and ways to prevent decay, be sure to schedule your appointment today.

Second-Hand Smoke Increases Risk of Periodontitis

It has been known that smoking increases the odds of developing periodontitis (gum disease), but new studies are indicating that exposure to second-hand smoke increases your risks of developing the disease by 62%.

man breaking cigarettePeriodontitis is caused by a buildup of plaque and bacteria in the space between your gums and tooth surfaces. The bacteria thrives in the plaque, and feasts on the bone, gum tissue, and connective tissue of your teeth. Left untreated, it can cause bone loss, infection, and tooth loss. It can also affect other parts of your body, including increased risk of strokes, and body-wide inflammation. Diseases such as diabetes can increase these risks as well.

But if you have a buildup of plaque, all hope is not lost. Your friendly Valencia dentist can help reverse the damage. Through scaling and debridement, they can clean up that plaque lodged below the gum line. They can also remove plaque buildup from the roots of your teeth using special tools and (mostlikely) local anesthetic. They can also repair any previous restorative work that looks like it may be trapping plaque and increasing risks of future damage.

Once the cleaning is done, your friendly Valencia dentist will reevaluate your gums, and most likely schedule you for a follow up visit within 3 months to ensure that no more bacteria is growing. If there is a recurrence, they will take care of it and teach you some proper cleaning techniques.
As always, if you have any questions about
periodontitis and second-hand smoke, feel free to ask your friendly Valencia dentist.

Cutting Down on Sugar Leads to a Healthier Life

The World Health Organization (WHO) released a statement that reducing the intake of “free sugars” to less than 10% of your energy income will lead to a healthier life, reducing the risks of being overweight, obesity, and most importantly, tooth decay.

CandyIn a typical 2,000 calorie diet, restricting free sugars to 10% or less would mean cutting back sugar to under 50 grams a day. Sugar occurs naturally in syrups, fruit juices, and honey, but it is added to many everyday foods, including food that isn't typically thought to be sweet. Ketchup, for example – a traditionally non-sweet food – can house up to 4g of sugar mixed inside it. Comparatively, a soda can contain up to 10 times more – 40g.

A “free sugar”, as reported by the WHO, is a sugar that is not naturally occurring in milk, fresh fruits, or fresh veggies. The WHO cannot find any adverse effects of these natural sugars being consumed – only the added “free sugars”.

Free sugar intake varies depending on region, as well. A typical resident of Hungary or Norway typically takes in 7-8% of their daily energy intake as free sugar.  In Portugal, it is almost 25%. And within those countries, rural areas take in less free sugars than populated urban areas.

Children with free sugar intake above 10% have a much higher risk of developing obesity and tooth decay. The biggest culprit of free sugars in children? Sugary drinks, including sodas and sports drinks.
If you have any further questions about sugar’s role in tooth decay, be sure to ask your friendly Valencia dentist today.

Glass Fillings Just Around the Corner

Tooth decay is the largest oral health problem in the world, and fillings are a standard option to repair damage. But fillings have had their weaknesses – up until now. Dentists are teaming up with physicists to develop a new material for fillings.

Child Getting Dental FillingsTraditionally, fillings were done with silver amalgam filling, which was strong and durable. However, it was gray in hue, stained teeth, and contained mercury. While it is still used in some parts of the world today, many dentists have moved towards composite fillings, which requires more frequent replacing than amalgam due to the way they are applied.

But scientists are working on a new filling, a glass ionomer, which will adhere to the surface of the tooth and slowly release fluoride into the mouth, preventing further tooth decay. As of now, the glass ionomer is strong, but researchers are studying the micro-structures of the material to make it even stronger.

The glass ionomer also boasts another beneficial property – it can be hand mixed, and doesn't need any special equipment to make it set on the teeth. This will help low-income areas and remote countries without electricity to provide much needed basic dental care.

Together, the dentists and physicists are perfecting the mixture. It currently contains too many liquid-filled pores when set which can compromise the structure of the filling. The researchers are experimenting with different minerals and ratios to see about reducing the pores and increasing the strength.

Glass ionomer fillings are the way of the future. If you have any questions about the benefits of each type of filling, or about the status on the glass ionomer fillings, be sure Valencia dentist today.

Water Flouridation

When fluoridation was first implemented in America in the 50s and 60s, there was a lot of controversy surrounding it. Many people cited false studies about the connection between fluoridation and AIDS, cancer, low IQ, or even arthritis. But it has all been proven false, as nearly 70% of America is drinking fluoridated water. One thing has occurred, however – a drop in tooth decay.
Woman Smiling
Initial studies of the effects of fluoridated water on teeth showed a decrease of 50% - 60% in childhood tooth decay. And the added fluorine has no impact on the water’s appearance, taste, or smell. This helps prevent future problems in teeth, especially for people living in areas where the financial aspect of dental care is a bit daunting.

The fluoride works by binding to your tooth’s enamel, and aiding in the remineralization of enamel. If the tooth’s enamel is weakened from early stages of decay, that fluoride boost will help repair and regrow the damaged minerals. And any fluoride not used by your teeth is effortlessly discarded by your body.

Fluoridated water has no known adverse effects on your body. There is a cosmetic risk of having too much fluorine called fluorosis. Dental fluorosis appears as bright white streaks on the surface of the teeth, and has no impact on the health or structure of the teeth. And while the streaks are rarely noticeable, dental procedures can reduce their appearance.

Recent studies have shown a trend of water fluoridation in high levels being linked to underactive thyroids in England. However, there are no definite conclusions that fluoride is to be blamed, and another yet unknown cause is likely the blame.

If you have any questions about the benefits of fluoride on your teeth, feel free to ask your friendly Valencia dentist. We are here to put your mind at ease.

Need a Tooth Pulled? Here is what to Expect.

There are many reasons a tooth may require extraction: tooth decay, trauma and damage, infection, or even a crowded jawline. But with today’s advances in dentistry, a tooth extraction does not need to be something that causes you anxiety. Your friendly Valencia dentist is here to walk you through the process.

Oral surgeryOnce your dentist has determined that a tooth (or teeth) needs to be pulled, they will schedule your appointment with an oral surgeon. The surgeon will begin by giving you a simple shot to administer local anesthetic, preventing pain and discomfort while they work. If you have having multiple teeth pulled, a larger dose of anesthetic may be required, possibly including some laughing gas so you sleep throughout the procedure.

Depending on the damage to the tooth, an extraction can be a simple pull, or it may require the surgeon to cut away gum and bone tissue. Some teeth are held tightly by ligaments in the jaw, as well as bone, making it more difficult. And in some more extreme cases, the tooth may need to be broken into several
smaller pieces in order to be removed. Either route, you will not feel a thing.

After the tooth (or teeth) is successfully removed, your surgeon will pack the extraction site with gauze and have you bite down on it. This helps to stop the bleeding and begin to form a blood clot. In very rare cases, the blood clot in the socket will break loose. This exposes the bone and can cause pain. In those situations, a quick trip back to your dentist will have the socket repacked, and the blood clot on its way to forming again.
In many cases, your surgeon will provide you with painkillers. Make sure you take them as prescribed. If there is any signs of swelling, applying an ice pack to the area will help keep it in check. The ice shouldn't be used for more than 10 minutes at a time, however. In order to avoid loosening the blood clot, try to prevent rinsing and spitting for about 48 hours. After that, rinsing with warm salt water will help with pain and stave off infection. Most importantly, get some rest in the day following the procedure. Your body needs to heal.

If you experience any intense pain after 24 hours, or have signs of infection, be sure to let your friendly Valencia dentist know as soon as you can. These are rare occurrences, but your friendly Valencia dentist is there to help.

In one to two weeks after your extraction, you should be back in fighting shape with your beautiful smile.

If you have any questions about the extraction process, be sure to ask your friendly Valencia dentist during your next appointment.

Is Your Tooth Infected?

Untreated tooth decay, exposed pulp, and gum disease can all lead to a dental abscess. An abscess occurs when an infection reaches the root of your tooth, or the space between your tooth and gums. Bacteria infects your tooth, reaching the pulp, and can spread throughout your tooth and even into your jaw bone.
A toothache is the biggest indicator of something awry. Some people with infected teeth suffer from extreme, throbbing pain in a centralized location. Some people have no pain at all. Once the pulp of your tooth dies, the pain often vanishes, but it doesn't mean the infection is gone.
boy getting a dental exam

With pain as an unreliable indicator, you can also check for other symptoms. People fighting an infection will often time have a fever, swollen neck glands, or ill feelings. A dying tooth will often times leave a bitter taste in your mouth, and have a foul smell tainting your breath. And any swelling in the jaw or gums is always a sign of concern. An abscess can form in your gums, often filling with pus.

In order to rid yourself of the infection, you must sometimes have any abscesses drained. A root canal is often suggested, or even tooth removal. And then a strong dose of antibiotics will finish off any lingering infections. If the pain is unbearable, ibuprofen can sometimes be used to take the edge off.

Teeth abscesses and infections can be prevented, of course, by maintaining oral health and visiting your friendly Valencia dentist regularly. If you have any concerns about your tooth’s health, be sure to ask your dentist.

Flabby Gums, Flabby Health

When you’re in for your quarter yearly cleaning, you may hear your dentist or dental hygienist reciting numbers. They aren’t counting your teeth, but they are taking specific measurements. They use a carefully calibrated tool to assess your gum health.

Dental ExamThe tool they use is a measuring device, which measures between 1mm and 9mm. They measure the distance between your gum and your tooth – the larger the gap, the more likely you are to suffer from gum disease.
A healthy gum gap measurement falls between 1 and 4 mm. Any number greater than that signifies that your gums may be inflamed, and that a deep cleaning may be necessary. The deep cleaning requires a special tool, possible small incisions, and a more frequent professional cleaning schedule. These extra treatments can cost you time and money.

The good news is that gum disease and flabby gums are preventable and, more importantly, treatable with regular cleaning and flossing. Inflammation can be caused when food particles are trapped in the gums, so with regular cleaning, the particles can be removed before they cause trouble.

If you have been having issues with bleeding or sensitive gums, make sure to schedule an appointment with your friendly Valencia dentist. They can assess your risk of gum disease, and go over steps to treat and prevent it.

Acidic Drinks Lead to Permanent Damage?

If your kids are addicted to their energy drinks, sodas, sports drinks, or even fruit juices, they may be doing irreversible damage to their teeth. The high acidity levels in these drinks may be doing more harm than once thought, studies show.

Boy Drinking SodaA research group in Australia has found that permanent damage to the tooth’s enamel is done within 30 seconds of the acid coming into contact with the teeth. It’s no longer a matter of having your child rinse or brush within an hour or 30 minutes, the damage is already done.

The mouth is typically in a balance between acid and protective mechanisms, but once the acid takes over, the teeth and enamel become damaged. And that highly acidic environment combined with other unhealthy factors can lead to damage to your kids’ teeth.

If they grind their teeth, have untreated gingivitis, suffer from acid reflux, or forget to floss – these all combine with acidic drinks into a powerhouse of long-term tooth damage.

The researchers claim that dental erosion caused by acidic drinks is on the rise in kids and teens. And, in most cases, can only be detected after other extensive tooth wear has already occurred. The dental erosion caused by acidic drinks can lead to a lifetime of compromised dental health that can cost time and money and happiness down the line. But it’s easily preventable now – nix the acidic drinks.

If you have any questions about dental erosion and the damages of acidic liquids on your enamel, be sure to ask your friendly Valencia dentist today.

Good News for Sensitive Teeth

If you are one of the many people who suffer from sensitive teeth, you may be in luck. Scientists are on their way to developing a new biomaterial that can rebuild broken and worn enamel, reducing your tooth sensitivity for an extended period of time.

Sensitive TeethSensitive teeth are caused by a number of different things, but can all be linked to an exposure of dentin. In healthy teeth, your tooth’s dentin is protected by the hardy enamel layer. When that is damaged or worn, it allows external things to reach the nerve-filled dentin, which causes the uncomfortable twinge of pain.
Some common things that contribute to tooth sensitivity are: a buildup of plaque eating away at your enamel, gum disease and gingivitis, grinding and wearing down your teeth causing the enamel to fracture, brushing too hard, or letting dental decay go untreated.

Most treatments on the market, including sealants and toothpastes, are effective, but do not stand up to the everyday wear-and-tear that your teeth go through. The scientists have found a longer lasting option for you. They made a concoction based on the elements found naturally in your teeth, mainly calcium and phosphorus, and created a paste. The paste is applied directly to your teeth, and plugs up tubes and other enamel deficiencies more deeply that traditional methods. This allows the paste to potentially repair the worn enamel while blocking outside agents from getting to your dentin. Since the paste goes so deep in your tooth, it is also longer lasting.

As of right now, the paste has only been tested on dogs with promising results. But if you are suffering today from tooth sensitivity, be sure to talk to your friendly Valencia dentist about your current options. There are many effective treatments, and with your Valencia dentist, your thedentist.com.
